Even if a business plans to engage in import-export activities in the future, obtaining an IEC beforehand is necessary.
To apply for an Import Export Code:
A valid Permanent Account Number (PAN) card issued by the Income Tax Department of India is mandatory.
The applicant must have a bank account in the name of the firm or individual, as the IEC is issued in the name of the applicant.
The applicant needs to submit relevant documents, including identity proof, address proof, and business entity details, to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) office.
Eligibility to Obtain an IEC Code: Any form of business registration, including sole proprietorship, partnership, private limited companies, and charitable organizations engaged in import and export activities in India, is eligible to register for an Import-Export Code (IEC), regardless of size. However, an IEC Number is not necessary for the import or export of goods for personal use unrelated to trade, manufacturing, or agriculture. No formal business setup is required in such cases.
